Games Workshop’s first tabletop wargame was Warhammer Fantasy. The world was inspired by Middle-earth, Conan the Barbarian, and European history. Warhammer Fantasy takes place in a setting similar to Europe, where humans, elves, orcs, lizardmen, and the undead fight for survival. Numerous novels and video games explore this world, and we can experience its battles ourselves on the tabletop. Over time, the classic world evolved and was replaced by Warhammer: Age of Sigmar, and later the old era returned under the name Warhammer: The Old World.

The origins of the fantasy genre reach far back into human history. The major breakthrough, however, came in the 20th century, when J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings ushered in a new era. The story, which also draws from Scandinavian mythology, inspired countless creators with its iconic characters and atmosphere. As a result, not only books and films were born, but also board games, role-playing games, and modern wargames such as Warhammer Fantasy.
